Automatic Peritoneal Dialysis Sets Are Installed and Operationalized in

Dr. Sheikh Hospital in Mashhad

With the presence of some university officials and province authorities, three Automatic Peritoneal Dialysis (APD) sets are inaugurated and operationalized in Dr. Sheikh Pediatric Subspecialist Hospital, a health center under supervision of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences.

According to WebDa, these sets were operationalized in a ceremony featuring Dr. Mehrabi Bahar, the president of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences, Mr. Bakhtiari, the deputy authority in Astan Quds Razavi (the administrative organization of managing the holy Shrine of Imam Reza (upon whom be peace)), Dr. Heidarian, the president of Dr. Sheikh Hospital, Dr. Dinmohammadi, the CEO of Samen Pharmaceutical Company and a group of other authorities and officials.

With this regard, Dr. Fatemeh Ghane’, Pediatric Nephrology Subspecialist and associate professor of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences asserted: it is unfortunate that a lot of kids get inflicted with chronic kidney failure and require dialysis. The best and most appropriate way of dialysis in kids is Peritoneal Dialysis as to various reasons such as congenital kidney and urinary system disorders, constant urinary infections and Nephrotic syndrome.

Dr. Ghane’ pointed out: in this method, a pipe is posited in the kid’s abdominal cavity. Parents would let the dialysis solutions enter the abdominal cavity every three hours through sterile methods. These solutions usually remain inside the abdominal cavity for three hours to exchange the material, then this process would be repeated again.

She added: in most countries all over the world, APD has been done through this machine since long, such that after giving the necessary instructions to the parents, the APD is handed in to the patient. Each night at bed time, parents connect the pipe in the patient’s body to the machine. During the night, the dialysis solutions would automatically enter the kid’s abdomen, and after material exchange, the solution is extracted. Through this method, there would be no need for dialysis during the day. These kids can go to school and have their routine activities normally like any other kid. Moreover, the parents don’t need to spend their whole day on this matter for the kid as every three hours the dialysis is manually performed.

This subspecialist in Pediatric Nephrology and associate professor of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences added: Dr. Sheikh’s APD center is the best Pediatric APD center as for both the quality and quantity. At the moment 43 patients are covered in this center.

She asserted: recently, with the attempts of Samen Pharmaceutical Company and Work and Though Company (a sponsor of APD in Iran), a number of APD machines are imported to the country. As the solutions required for this type of peritoneal dialysis is very expensive and must be imported to the country, which imposes great expenses to the health and treatment systems, Samen Pharmaceutical Company attempted to produce these solutions. This is a very precious measure.

Dr. Ghane’ pointed out: after the visits, three APD machines have been handed in to this center. In the future, some more sets would also be added.

She emphasized: the above mentioned companies handed in these sets to the hospital free of any charge. This center also presents these sets to patients to be used at home free of charge.

“The solutions are in 2 liter packs. For every night’s consumption, 2-liter solution bottles are at least required. Samen Pharmaceutical Company has also provided this opportunity to offer them to the patients free of charge, too”, she said.

The associate professor of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences stated: by APD, a great burden would be off parents’ shoulders. The kids would also have dialysis more peacefully during the night.

It should be mentioned that Dr. Sheikh Subspecialist Pediatric Hospital is the only center which has Pediatric Nephrology, Peritoneal Dialysis and Hemodialysis in Khorasan Razavi Province which extensively covers patients from neighboring cities, too.
