Halal Food Standards Developed in SMIIC with More than 98 Percent Conformity to Shi’a Fiqh
Referring to Iran’s membership in the Standards and Metrology Institute for the Islamic Countries (SMIIC) of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Head of National Halal Organization said: “during recent years, this organization has followed the policy of defining a unified standard for halal food and finally it was unanimously and with more than 98 percent conformity to Shi’a Fiqh approved in SMIIC”. According to the news headquarters of the first international halal products conference of Mashhad, Engineer Marandi pointed to the importance of the issue of halal, especially its economic importance in today’s world and said: “as Muslims widely travel and migrate to various countries in the world, access to halal food is a major concern for them so much so that even non-Muslim countries have tried to meet this need. Of course this mainly stems from economic attractions of the halal business”. Stating that there are enormous potentials in the country to enter the global business of halal products, he said: “if exploited purposefully, these potentials can substitute oil products’ business”. Referring to the suggestion to form a halal policy-making council and its establishment in 2016, Engineer Marandi said: “in this council, scientific, Fiqhi, commercial and standardization committees work on the issue of halal”. He added: “currently, the Institute of Standards and Industrial Research of Iran is the only source that issues halal logo and we hope this organization’s activities help enhance and promote the culture of halal”. It should be noted that the first international halal products conference hosted by Mashhad University of Medical Sciences began its work with the presence of prominent figures from the Islamic world.
