It is my privilege to welcome you to the Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery at Mashhad University of Medical Sciences. Building upon a proud academic heritage of over 70 years, our department remains at the forefront of clinical education, tertiary patient care, and surgical innovation in northeastern Iran.

Anchored at Imam Reza Hospital, our department delivers advanced academic training and specialized clinical care across rhinology, skull base surgery, otology, neurotology, laryngology, pediatric ENT, and head and neck oncology. Guided by our strategic plan, we are committed to providing an exceptional learning environment that fosters critical thinking, surgical mastery, and translational research. We aim to equip our residents and fellows with the expertise and ethical foundation required to address complex clinical challenges and contribute significantly to the global progress of otolaryngology.

Overview

The Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery at Mashhad University of Medical Sciences has a distinguished history spanning over 70 years. Developed under the leadership of pioneering academic figures such as Professor Yaghmaei, Professor Mir-Salehi, Professor Norouz-Beigi, and Professor Mokhtari, the department has consistently positioned itself as a leading national hub for clinical training, patient care, and academic research. Recognizing the rapid changes in medical technology and the growing demand for subspecialized care, the department formulated its strategic development plan (Strategic Plan 1401-1405 / 2022-2026). This document, built upon over 100 hours of academic collaborative planning and stakeholder consultations, outlines the department’s roadmap to elevate national scientific standing and foster innovation in head and neck surgery.

Expertise

The department provides advanced tertiary care and clinical training across several key subspecialties:

• Otology and Neurotology: Medical and surgical management of hearing loss, chronic ear diseases, and vestibular disorders.
• Rhinology and Skull Base Surgery: Endoscopic sinus surgery, corrective rhinoplasty, and anterior skull base interventions.
• Head and Neck Oncologic Surgery: Comprehensive surgical treatment of benign and malignant tumors of the head, neck, thyroid, and salivary glands.
• Laryngology and Voice Disorders: Diagnostic and therapeutic services for airway, swallowing, and vocal fold disorders.
• Pediatric Otolaryngology: Managing congenital and acquired airway and ENT disorders in children.

Clinical Scope

The department operates primarily out of Imam Reza Hospital, managing dedicated outpatient clinics, audiology units, vestibular assessment labs, and high-volume surgical operating suites. It serves as the main referral center for complex head and neck pathologies, maxillofacial trauma, and reconstructive surgeries in northeastern Iran.

• Mission: To educate the next generation of otolaryngologists, general practitioners, and allied health professionals through rigorous evidence-based training, and to conduct transformative clinical and translational research.
