The Department of Speech Therapy (Speech-Language Pathology) is a dedicated rehabilitative specialty focused on the assessment, differential diagnosis, and therapeutic management of human communication and swallowing disorders. Grounded in phonology, neurobiology, and linguistic sciences, our department addresses impairments stemming from neurological insults, congenital anomalies, developmental delays, and emotional challenges across the human lifespan.

History and Evolution

Established to fulfill a critical rehabilitation need in eastern Iran, the Speech Therapy program has evolved into a vital clinical and research academic center within MUMS. By integrating clinical attachments with specialized pediatric and adult rehabilitation clinics, the department bridges clinical phonetics with cognitive neurological rehabilitation, serving as a key referral center for speech, language, and cognitive-communicative rehabilitation.

Academic & Research Scope

Our academic framework spans both physiological speech production mechanics and cognitive language systems:

• Speech Mechanics Rehabilitation: In-depth evaluation and management of phonation, vocal fold resonance, intonation, pitch variations, and aeromechanical respiratory functions.
• Language & Cognitive Pathology: Scientific remediation of phonological manipulation, morphology, syntax, semantics, and social/pragmatic communication disorders.
• Etiological Focus Areas: Specialized therapeutic protocols for stuttering, dysfluency, voice pathologies, aphasia resulting from stroke, motor speech disorders, and speech defects associated with structural anomalies such as cleft palate.
• Pediatric & Geriatric Neuro-Rehabilitation: Interventions for developmental language delays, autism-associated communication deficits, and neurodegenerative communication decline.
