🏥 Overview

Dr. Ali Shariati Hospital is an established academic, clinical, and surgical referral hospital affiliated with Mashhad University of Medical Sciences (MUMS). Situated on an expansive 26,000-square-meter campus at the western gateway of Mashhad (Torghabeh road), the institution combines specialized inpatient departments, open-heart surgical suites, critical care infrastructure, and active multidisciplinary outpatient clinics serving regional and international patients.

📜 History & Institutional Heritage

The Sanatorium Era (1949–1978)

  • Origins (1949 / 1328 SH): Construction commenced through the leadership of the late Dr. Seyed Mousa Hejazi and the initiative of the Khorasan Tuberculosis Association on 26,000 square meters of land endowed by philanthropist Haj Abbas Tavakkolizadeh.
  • Early Operations (1951 / 1330 SH): The facility began admitting patients as the regional Tuberculosis Sanatorium (Tuberculosis Nursery) with an initial 32-bed capacity. Following Dr. Hejazi’s passing in 1952, and honoring his final wish, his mausoleum was constructed within the hospital gardens, where it remains preserved and accessible to visitors today.
  • For nearly three decades, the hospital served as northeastern Iran’s specialized containment and treatment center for tuberculosis.

Post-Revolution Modernization & Clinical Diversification

  • Following 1978, long-term tuberculosis rehabilitation was centralized at Taleghani Hospital, allowing Shariati Hospital to transition into a general surgical and inpatient medical center, introducing General Surgery, Internal Medicine, Burn Care, and Emergency units.
  • 1994 (1373 SH): A modern 500-square-meter facility with 20 dedicated beds was inaugurated in the northwestern wing, housing the Pulmonary Department and Tuberculosis Research Center to advance respiratory science and diagnostics.
  • 2010 (1389 SH): The medical complex completed substantial infrastructural upgrades, inaugurating adult Hemodialysis suites, Open Heart Surgery theaters, and a modern Cardiac Catheterization / Angiography department.

COVID-19 Frontline Hub & Infrastructure Rebirth (2019–Present)

  • Pandemic Referral Center (2019–2021): With the onset of COVID-19, Dr. Ali Shariati Hospital was designated as Khorasan Razavi’s central referral facility. Within 48 hours, all general non-respiratory cases were redirected, converting the hospital into a dedicated pulmonary and intensive care center for 18 consecutive months.
  • Charitable Contributions: Philanthropic donors contributed substantially during this period, funding modern Intensive Care Units (ICU), advanced cardiac surgical rooms, and a 350-square-meter accommodation complex for visiting physicians and patients’ companions.
  • Comprehensive Reopening (2022 / 1401 SH to Present): Following extensive clinical and managerial restructuring, the hospital reopened all standard and subspecialty wards, operating at full capacity across surgical, maternal, neonatal, and cardiac care.
