830 Patients are on kidney Transplant Waiting List

Head of Organs Provider Center at Montasarieh Hospital in Mashhad Ebrahim Khalegi, PhD, said that the center contacting other hospitals, is informed of  presence of a brain-death patient. Transferring the patient to Montasarieh Hospital, it verifies death brain and harvests his/her other organs.

In an interview with WEBDA, he added, “20 units are active in transplant process, one dubbed Organ Receivers Unit is at Mashhad University of Medical Sciences.”

“In order to have an active Organ Receivers Unit, all other units active in transplanting organs should be informed so that heart, kidney, liver, skin, pancreas, cornea, lung and other transplantable organs could be transplanted at the right time.”

About kidney transplant, he noted, “After kidney has been harvested from the body of a brain-death patient, kidney receiver should be prepared for transplant surgery.”

“Generally, a rental patient is primarily introduced to the hospital by a nephrologist and certain tests, advices and measures will be conducted at Montasarieh Hospital.”

“Attending psychological and medical-assistance classes, depending on his/her blood group and age, the patient is placed on the waiting list to receive kidney.”

Dr. Khaleghi maintained that an important issue in kidney transplant is the period of dialysis since the longer a patient has experienced dialysis, of more priority he/she will be to receive kidney.”

“Following initial tests, the receiver and the donor will experience special tests and four patients will be selected as receivers.”

“Two patients will be main receivers and the other two will be placed on booking list. If any problem arises for the main receivers during transplant surgery, other receivers will be called so that the transplantable kidney might not decay.”

He called receiver and donor tests as emergency and compliant ones, adding, “Before rental patient’s name is placed on waiting list to receive kidney, Kidney Transplant Council must confirm him/her.”

“After successful kidney transplant, receivers will be cared for in ICU for two days, then they will be hospitalized for two weeks. After leaving hospital, they will be monitored by a specialist or transplant clinics at Montasarieh Hospital.”

“Currently, 188 patients are on active waiting list and 640 are on complimentary one.”

“Those patients on active waiting list will have transplant kidney surgery. However, patients on complimentary waiting list, are in the process of being placed on the active waiting list
