quarantine and its objectives
Dr. Majid Khadem Rezaeian, assistant professor, community health medicine, Mashhad University of Medical Sciences explains quarantine and its objectives: Let's talk a few minutes about quarantine in the current situation when the pandemic attack of the coronavirus has challenged the globe seriously. Quarantine refers to the limitation of activities ae well as the separation of people who are seemingly healthy but may be exposed to the virus. It aims to symptoms monitoring and early diagnosis of disease in individuals. It must be differentiated between quarantine and isolation. Isolation means separating the ill people who undergo treatment to prevent the spread of infection. The interesting point is that isolation is supported legally by international law. Materials 30, 31, 32 public health provisions, recognize the sovereignty of countries to reduce traffic or prohibits the movement of people based on their own health protocols and allow them to ban the movement of persons under international law. What are the advantages of quarantine? The quarantine can delay the onset of a virus spreading cycle in a community where does not have a virus sufferer; note that quarantine cannot interrupt the virus transmission, but can only delay it. On the other hand, if the virus is circulating in the community, and it has been faced with the virus epidemic, it can still delay the peak of the pandemic. I apply "delay" in both situations. Since the health system is worn out at the peak of all, and by delaying the peak of all in a society, the health care system has the opportunity to prepare itself to face of new viruses and prevent erosion of forces and equipment. It is a great benefit for the health system by itself. But who should be quarantined? If a person is exposed to a patient whose disease has been approved by laboratory tests, he should be quarantined 14 days from the last time of exposure. The quarantine can be done in either the approved health care centers or at home, in order to monitor the occurrence of symptoms during the quarantine time. However, based on the exposure definition, if a person has been exposed to a patient whose disease has been approved by lab tests from 2 days before to 14 days after the onset of symptoms, he should be quarantined 14 days. The following criteria have been considered for exposure: A face-to-face encounter with a patient with COVID-19 at a distance of 1 meter for more than 15 minutes. Being in a shared environment with people who have the virus, such as classroom, party, home, or even workplace. Providing health care (for medical staff) for people who have the virus but do not have personal protective equipment and travel near the infected person, regardless of what the vehicle is. Other causes may be met by health authorities, but these four points have been mentioned by the World Health Organization as exposure or contact. |
