Associate professor of emergency medicine at Mashhad University of Medical Sciences said: “avoiding from excess heat, wearing light-colored loose-fitting cotton clothes, drinking lots of cold beverages, avoiding intense physical activity and exercise in hot and humid weather prevent from heatstroke”.

Talking to WebDa, Dr. Hamidreza Reihani said: “diseases resulting from heat are quite widespread in summer. When the body is exposed to heat, its defensive mechanisms do not allow its temperature to exceed the normal limit”.

“Meanwhile, in case compensative mechanisms are not able to protect body temperature”, he continued, “it goes up and creates trouble for the person”.

Associate professor of emergency medicine at Mashhad University of Medical Sciences said: “under these conditions, the body sends blood to the surface of the skin to cool itself; as a result, less blood reaches the brain, muscles and other organs of the body. This disrupts physical and mental activity and might be very dangerous in some cases”.

“Avoiding contact with excess heat can prevent from heatstroke in hot weather”, added he.

He said: “of course, everyone is prone to heatstroke but the elderly, children, the obese, cardiovascular and renal patients and those who take anti-histamine, anti-hypertension and psychiatric medication and those with distorted compensatory mechanisms are more sensitive”.

Associate professor of emergency medicine at Mashhad University of Medical Sciences noted: “construction workers, farmers, bakers, athletes, etc. are exposed to intense heat and are more at risk”.

Dr. Reihani said: “when a person is exposed to excess heat, especially if they are physically active, their body loses much water and salt in the form of perspiration; as a result, the body experiences intense dehydration, blood circulation is affected and enough blood does not reach body organs and the brain”.

Referring to diseases and symptoms of heatstroke, he said: “cramps, red heat and skin warming, nausea and vomiting, stomach ache, syncope, arrhythmia, low blood pressure, poor pause, reduced urine volume, reduced consciousness, seizure, etc. are among the symptoms of heatstroke”.

Associate professor of emergency medicine at Mashhad University of Medical Sciences added: “using light-colored loose-fitting cotton clothes, drinking lots of cold beverages, avoiding intense physical activity and exercise in hot and humid weather prevent from heatstroke”.

Dr. Reihani pointed to first things to do when meeting a person suffering from heat stroke and said: “to treat heatstroke, the person should be cooled down by being exposed to cold weather, wetting the body and taking a shower with water a few degrees colder than body temperature”.

He said: “then, liquid and salts lost by perspiration should be replaced by drinking cold beverages, and in severe cases lowering consciousness by intravenous injection of liquids
