Eye Bank at Mashhad University of Medical Sciences Make Cornea Transplantations Possible
Executive Official in Eye Bank Project at Mashhad University of Medical Sciences Siamak Zareei, PhD, said that donated corneas received from brain-dead patients as well as from anyone who posthumously has donated his/her cornea, are preserved in the bank, WEBDA reported.
“Cornea donation unlike other organs that can be transplanted to others following brain death of the donor, could be done by anyone who wants to donate his/her own cornea.”
“Cornea is harvestable from body till 36 hours following the donor’s death.”
“Iran’s Eye Bank was launched in Tehran 20 years ago and many corneal transplantations have been carried out since then”
“Currently, many Arab and Muslim countries do not feature any eye bank. Whereas based on international standards, for every 20 million people, one eye bank is needed.”
“Eye Bank at Mashhad University of Medical Sciences has been constructed based on American and European models.”
