First Kidney Transplantation Was Performed with Cooperation of the Surgical Team of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences

Deputy of the Ministry of Health and Medical Education, regarding developing educational cooperation with Afghanistan, said: “First kidney transplantation was performed with cooperation of the surgical team of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences.”

According to WEBDA, Dr. Abdollah Bahrami added: “Implementing kidney transplant surgery in Afghanistan is one of the plans included in the 2014 Memorandum of Understanding regarding educational cooperation of Afghanistan with Mashhad University of Medical Sciences.”

He added: “First kidney transplant was performed from a donor mother to her 11-year-old daughter in Loghman Hakim Hospital of Herat with cooperation of the kidney transplant team of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences.”

President of Imam Reza Hospital of Mashhad continued: “Kidney transplant team of Logham Hakim Hospital of Herat and Khatam-al-Nabiyin Hospital of Kabul, consisting of 17 people including medical doctors, nurses, and operating room and laboratory experts have been trained in Imam Reza Hospital for three months”.

According to Dr. Bahrami, all required tests have been done on this mother and her daughter in Imam Reza Hospital of Mashhad, prior to the kidney transplant surgery.

Dr. Bahrami implied that the Iranian team sent to Afghanistan consisted of 11 people including medical specialists, nurses, operating room and laboratory experts from Mashhad University of Medical Sciences.

He stated: “The second kidney transplant of Afghanistan will be performed with cooperation of Mashhad surgical team in Khatam-al-Nabiyin Hospital of Kabul within next month.

Dr. Reza Mahdavi, head of organ transplant team of Montaserieh Special Hospital for Organ Transplantation of Mashhad, Dr. Ali Asghar Yarmohammadi, president of Montaserieh Hospital of Mashhad, Dr. Abbas Ali Zeraati, nephrologist, Dr. Seyed Javad Mirzaee, anesthesiologist, and Dr. Massoudkhani, manager of Taeghani Hospital of Mashhad were some of the members of kidney transplant team sent to Afghanistan.

Also, Torkamani and Zolfaghari, nurses of the ICU and kidney departments, Mahdi Qandehari, operating room expert, and Zarifian, laboratory expert were members of the kidney transplant team sent to Afghanistan during 21-24 April, 2016.
