MUMS Has a Very High Standing in Statistics

Director of MUMS Statistics Office said, “Mashhad University of Medical Sciences employs information technology and professional reporting software and has therefore a very high standing in statistics among Iranian universities of medical sciences.”

Interviewed by Webda on the occasion of World Statistics Day, Dr. Maryam Salari felicitated administrators, faculty members, experts, and all those interested in statistics, on the 20^th National Statistics and Planning Day Anniversary.

She then added, “With limited resources, enormous responsibilities and widespread service area, the health system needs up-to-date and readily available health information systems. The Statistics Office of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences is accordingly generating official statistics in several steps.”

 “The first step is documentation of official statistics history to know where we have been in the past and what is our currant position; the second is documentation of standard definitions and statistical indices and items in order to draw the same conclusions from the same information; and the third step is increasing the share of register statistics (data recorded right at the time of occurrence) in the total official statistics of the university. Our mission is to analyze official data in order to help senior university management in decision making, plan for quick and easy access of senior managers to official information and statistics, and, finally, minimize lack of response by creating new structures and processes,” she continued.

Dr. Salari noted, “Statistics and information are among the most powerful tools and instruments for future planning, past performance appraisal and decision making at various management levels, and statistical and planning systems are two of the pillars of development of every society. Like any type of system, successful functioning of a statistical system requires planning and supervision. In order to achieve the goals set in the statistical system of Ministry of Health and Medical Education, the Statistics Office of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences has focused on creation of a centralized database and exploitation of information technology for producing, collecting and analyzing official data.”

 “97 statistics officers are currently helping us in data collection and with new information processes in the three areas of health, treatment and education across the coverage areas of the University. Senior decision makers try to highlight and promote the science of statistics. Mashhad University of Medical Sciences has a very high position in the area of statistics and planning, and frequently counsels other universities. This stems from application of information technology and professional reporting software and enjoying the very good statistics science base available in the University,” she continued.

Dr. Salari finally said, “The Statistics Office of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences is continuously generating and organizing information, because the immeasurable and unmeasured cannot be well managed, and information production is very important for decision making.”
