Mashhad Hosts Seventh International Congress on Hypospadias and Disorders of Sexual Development in Infants and Children

Seventh international congress on Hypospadias and disorders of sex development was held October 25-27 hosted by Mashhad University of Medical Sciences.

According to WebDa, chairman of the international congress on Hypospadias and disorders of sex development said: “this congress was held in cooperation with Iranian Society of Pediatric Surgeons, Iranian Society of Urology and the International Society of Hypospadias and Disorders of Sex Development (I.S.H.D); it has retraining scores for departments of pediatric surgery, pediatric urology, urology, pediatric endocrinology, pediatrics, pediatric psychology, forensic medicine, gynecological surgery, anesthesia, pathology, radiology, nursery and genetics”.

Dr. Mehran Hiradfar noted that the aim of this congress was to achieve methods to diagnose such disorders at their early stages of development and to treat them in the first year after birth. More than 50 participants from various countries took part in this congress.

He mentioned that it was scheduled to display a live surgery on children with sexual disorders by eleven experienced surgeons from India, the U.S.A, Germany, and Canada; he said: “this team conducted 9 surgeries on children under the age of three who had disorders of sexual development. Live broadcast of these surgeries in the videoconference room helps surgeons find out key points in this type of surgery”.

Associate professor of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences said: “80 articles on disorders of sexual development in children were submitted from abroad and inside the country to this congress mainly in the form of poster presentation, of which the most important ones were presented as a lecture”.

He said: “disorders of sexual development and Hypospadias are congenital in which sexuality of the newborn baby is not identified. If diagnosed late, the people with these disorders will have difficulty getting married and will have problems with their society and family; however, early diagnosis of this disorder helps cure infants in the first year of their life”.

Associate professor of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences said: “this congenital disease is common in boys who have troubled genital system. This is a complex disease about which we should raise our awareness”.

Dr. Hiradfar said: “disorders of sexual development in boys are mostly due to genetic factors; however, in some cases such genetic cause is not involved”.

This congress was held October 25-27 in Akbar Children’s Hospital.
