New Method for Treating Bladder Fistula at Mashhad University of Medical Sciences

With the efforts of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences Academic Staff, a novel method for treating bladder fistula (vesicovaginal fistula) was successfully implemented at Imam Reza Hospital of Mashhad.

According to WebDa, this novel method of treatment was successfully implemented at Imam Reza Hospital with the cooperation of Dr. Malihe Keshvari, associate professor of urology and Dr. Dariush Hamidi Alamdari, assistant professor of biochemistry at Mashhad University of Medical Sciences.

So far 20 patients have been treated using this method and results of the procedure, done for the first time, have been published in American Journal of Urology.

This publication motivated a German physician, suffering from this disease to refer to Imam Reza Hospital of Mashhad for treatment.

This physician performed various researches of this procedure in different countries renowned in the field of medicine and ultimately reached one answer for her treatment, which was provided by the successful research made by Dr. Keshvari and Dr. Hamidi at Imam Reza Hospital of Mashhad’s Urology Unit.

Dr. Malihe Keshvari, professor of women’s urology at Mashhad University of Medical Sciences stated in regards to the newly presented method for treating bladder fistulas: during this procedure, an injection is made in the bladder fistula containing the patients’ blood, platelets, and throat fibrins extracted from the patients’ blood.

This associate professor at Mashhad University of Medical Sciences pointed out that during normal procedures, patients have to go through a three hour surgery and spend 2 weeks in convalescence accompanied by pain and bleeding. She also stated in this regard: the new method of treatment only takes 15 minutes and patients can be relieved of the side effects and complications that accompany a normal open surgery.

Dr. Malihe Keshvari also added in regards to disease type that: this disease falls in the category of women’s urology diseases. What this disease does is it causes formation of fistulas in the urinary tract – vaginal system pathway. Symptoms of this disease are continuous release of urine.

She also mentioned: this condition is very troublesome and worrying for the patient and reduces life quality.

Dr. Hamidi, member of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences Biochemistry Department stated in this regard: during this novel procedure, 60ccs of the patients’ blood and platelets and throat fibrin extracted from the blood is injected into the bladder fistula. The blood used for injection comes from the patient him/her-self and no external products are contained within the injection, thus relieving the patient from any side effects or complications, which further increases patients’ comfort and wellness.

Ultimately, Dr. Hamidi expressed his appreciation for president of the university, director of the hospital, deputy of research at the university, urology unit of Imam Reza Hospital, and Mashhad Medical Schools Biochemistry Department, and congratulated everyone and expressed great joy for making Iran renowned amongst researchers and even western physicians.
