The First Pancreas Transplantation Successfully Done at Mashhad University of Medical Sciences

The first Pancreas transplant on a 29-year-old young was successfully done at Montaserieh Hospital of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences.

Talking to WebDa, Head of Pancreas transplant team of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences said in this regard: “performing this transplant in the university is outstanding and, following Shiraz and Tehran, places Mashhad the third in terms of Pancreas transplant operation”.

This faculty member of Mashhad University of Medical Sciecnes added: “Pancreas transplant is one of the most complex transplant operations that require highly advanced hospital facilities and a very sophisticated medical team”.

Head of Pancreas transplant team of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences said: “most patients who suffer from diabetes, especially type I diabetes, in a young age require this transplant operation when ocular and renal complications occur, or when their level of consciousness is reduced following blood sugar drops”.

Dr. Aliakbarian noted that Pancreas transplant alone is not as important as Pancreas and kidney transplant i.e., transplanting Pancreas and kidney is regarded the best type of transplant.

The patient was a 29-year-old young suffering from type II diabetes

Referring to conditions improved to perform Pancreas transplant operation in Mashhad, he said: “finally, after five years, in cooperation with a well-coordinated medical team, a 29-year-old patient suffering from Diabetic Nephropathy and receiving insulin underwent simultaneous kidney and Pancreas transplant”.

Head of Pancreas transplant team of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences said: “to perform such crucial operation, the organ donor was a 19-year-old young suffering from internal bleeding and brain death whose organs were donated and used in Montaserieh Hospital by permission of his family”.

Simultaneous kidney and Pancreas transplant operation took eight hours

Pointing to the way this transplant operation was carried out, Dr. Aliakbarian said: “this operation began 10:00 a.m. and lasted until 6:00 p.m. yesterday. At first, kidney was transplanted and at the same time, Pancreas was prepared to be transplanted”.

He said: “immediately after kidney transplant was done, the surgery team began to transplant Pancreas and both transplants were carried out successfully”.

Head of Pancreas transplant team of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences said: “currently, the patient is generally well and his functions are satisfactory which shows this complex operation has been successful”.

Dr. Aliakbarian added: “liver transplant in Mashhad began in 2013 and since then attempts were made to perform Pancreas transplant in the university; however, due to lack of facilities, it took a few years to perform this operation and it was recently possible with the help of donors and the purchased facilities”.

Five kidney, Pancreas and kidney transplants were carried out within the last five days

Referring to hard work done by the transplant team of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences, he said: “transplant operation is very tough, time-consuming and at the same time specialized; the team was performing the operation from 8:00 in the morning until 7:00 in the afternoon that is very overwhelming”.

Head of Pancreas transplant team of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences said: “transplant operation should be totally carried out by the transplant team and no one else; this is why five liver transplant and one Pancreas transplant operations were done by one team”.

“Yesterday”, added Dr. Aliakbarian, “besides simultaneous kidney and Pancreas transplants, a kidney transplant and a liver transplant were also carried out by the team that is appreciable”.

In the future, diabetic kidney failure patients undergo Pancreas transplant

He noted: “I should appreciate Dr. Totuni, the transplant surgeon of the team; Dr. Mahmud Tavakoli, kidney transplant surgeon; M.Sc. Dr. Milani, subspecialist in transplant anesthesia; Dr. Hatefi, anesthesiologist, departments of digestive diseases and nephrology, and Montaserieh Hospital personnel who also helped me in this operation”.

Head of Pancreas transplant team of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences said: “in the future, patients who are introduced by our nephrologist and endocrinologist colleagues and suffer from diabetic kidney failure can be registered in the list of Pancreas and kidney transplant patients by informing the transplant office of Montaserieh Hospital”.
