The Impact of Using the HPV Vaccine on Reducing the Risk of Cervical Cancer

A faculty member of the Department of Radiotherapy and Oncology of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences considered the use of HPV vaccine as an effective measure to reduce the risk of cervical cancer.

According to WEBDA, Dr. Mahboubeh Sadeghi pointed that cervical cancer, considered as a common cancer among women, makes up 1.5 percent of cancer mortality in women. She added that this cancer can be prevented by the implementation of care and screening programs.

Stating that the continuous implementation of screening in women as well as the Pap Smear test reduces the risk of this disease in women, she pointed out that the development of this cancer in different parts of the world is in fact indicative of people’s cultural attitude towards sexual activities and the amount of acceptance and influence of the screening program. The highest incidence of cervical cancer belongs to communities who do not undergo screening and the Pap Smear test.

This assistant professor of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences emphasized that women who have started their first sexual intercourse at an early age, have had multiple sexual partners, whose husbands have had multiple sexual partners, and have had childbirth at an early age are prone to greater risk of developing this disease.

Dr. Sadeghi reiterated that based on the research conducted, the Human Papillomavirus (HPV, a viral infection) can be seen in almost all cervical cancers and that this viral infection is needed but not enough for the development of cervical cancer. She added that there is a strong relationship between the incidence of HPV and the spread of cervical cancer.

She added that the use of HPV vaccine, leading to reduced cervical cancer, for women between 9 and 26 years old has been confirmed today.
