Department of Pharmaceutics

Overview

The Department of Pharmaceutics is a core pharmaceutical discipline dedicated to turning active chemical compounds into safe, stable, and bioavailable dosage forms for clinical use. It bridges basic physical pharmacy, industrial manufacturing, and advanced drug delivery technologies. Through comprehensive theoretical and laboratory training, the department prepares general pharmacists (Pharm.D.) and industrial pharmaceutical specialists to master dosage form formulation, biopharmaceutics, pharmaceutical nanotechnology, and translational industrial manufacturing.

History and Evolution

As one of the founding academic units of the School of Pharmacy, the department was established in 1971 (1350 SH) on Asrar Street alongside the founding of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Nutrition. Initial courses—including Introduction to Pharmacy, Dosage Forms, and Industrial Pharmacy—were offered in collaboration with visiting professors from the University of Tehran, such as Dr. Ali Vaziri and Dr. Morteza Rafiee Tehrani, followed by pioneering faculty members Dr. Javad Mirdamadi, Dr. Hossein Erfani, Dr. Noman Khalili, and Dr. Soraya Salami. The department’s first instructional facilities, the Dosage Forms Laboratory (founded by Dr. Javad Mirdamadi) and the Industrial Pharmacy Laboratory (founded by Dr. Abdulhossein Moghbel of Ahvaz School of Pharmacy), were established on Golestan Street. Following the relocation to the main University Campus in 1982 (1361 SH) and the inauguration of the school’s modern complex in 2016 (1395 SH), the department expanded into dedicated research and industrial facilities on the third floor of Block C.

Academic & Research Scope

The academic and technological programs focus on pharmaceutical formulation, advanced biopharmaceutics, and applied industrial manufacturing:

  • Curricular Education: Delivering theoretical, practical, and hands-on laboratory training in Introduction to Pharmacy, Liquid and Solid Dosage Forms, Biopharmaceutics and Pharmacokinetics, Industrial Pharmacy, and Physical Pharmacy.
  • Targeted & Novel Drug Delivery Systems (NDDS): Formulation, characterization, and evaluation of controlled-release, sustained-release, and site-specific drug delivery carriers.
  • Pharmaceutical Nanotechnology: Design and fabrication of lipidic, polymeric, and inorganic nanoparticles to enhance the solubility, stability, and bioavailability of poorly soluble therapeutic agents.
  • Academia-Industry Collaboration: Establishing collaborative partnerships with pharmaceutical manufacturing plants, conducting scale-up technology transfers, and providing formulation consultancies.

Mission and Vision

  • Our Mission: To train competent pharmacists and industrial specialists through high-standard curricula; to conduct innovative research in targeted delivery systems and nanopharmaceutics to address community health needs; and to strengthen practical ties between academia and the national pharmaceutical industry.
  • Our Vision: To be a leading center of excellence in drug delivery innovation, industrial formulation development, and pharmaceutical nanotechnology education in the region.
