Ghaem  Hospital

Educational, Research, and Treatment Center
Mashhad University of Medical Sciences (MUMS)

About the Hospital

Ghaem (Qaem) Educational, Research, and Treatment Center is one of the largest tertiary teaching hospitals in Mashhad and Eastern Iran, operating under Mashhad University of Medical Sciences (MUMS). Located on Ahmadabad Street near Dr. Ali Shariati Square, the complex provides clinical care, specialized medical education, and biomedical research across Khorasan Razavi and adjacent provinces.

The establishment of the center began in 1960 (1339 SH) when a 35,000-square-meter campus was allocated to Mashhad University to build a dedicated university hospital with an initial planned capacity of 300 beds. Outpatient clinics commenced in 1967 (1346 SH), and inpatient clinical units began operating in 1971 (1350 SH) in a six-story building under the successive names Shahnaaz, Dr. Mossadegh, and Hazrat Qaem (AS).

Surgical services were inaugurated in 1973 (1352 SH), progressively expanding to thoracic surgery, pediatric and reconstructive plastic surgery, urology, nephrology, hemodialysis, intensive care, and kidney transplantation. The medical complex continued its clinical expansion with a 10,000-square-meter facility in 1983 (1362 SH), CT scanning services in 1985 (1364 SH), open-heart surgery programs in 1990 (1369 SH), and a dedicated southern medical building with MRI imaging in 1996 (1375 SH).

Strategic Goals & Clinical Commitment

  • Institutional Goal: To serve as a leading benchmark for educational, research, and therapeutic services through continuous quality enhancement and patient safety assurance at optimal cost.
  • Service Commitment: To deliver specialty and subspecialty healthcare and advance scientific research using modern medical equipment and technology, in adherence to international healthcare standards, ethical values, and patient-centered clinical safety.

Philanthropy & Community Participation (Charity Affairs)

To leverage the financial contributions and expertise of domestic and international benefactors for upgrading educational, research, therapeutic, and patient amenities, the Public Participation & Philanthropy Unit was established in June 2014 (Khordad 1393 SH) under the direct supervision of the Hospital Director.

Because Ghaem Hospital serves a substantial population of rural and vulnerable patients, this initiative aims to narrow the amenity gap between public and private institutions by procuring patient comfort items and essential non-budgeted department equipment. Contributed items are officially inventoried and marked with donor memorial plaques.

Core Objectives:

  • Evaluating patient-centered needs across educational, research, and treatment domains in accordance with healthcare standards and establishing priority classifications.
  • Formulating practical mechanisms to engage community and philanthropic contributions to address identified needs.
  • Submitting actionable operational proposals for facility expansion, accessibility enhancement, and administrative workflow improvement.
  • Identifying and onboarding benefactors and charitable groups to participate in institutional development initiatives.
