Overview
Welcome to the Department of General Surgery at Mashhad University of Medical Sciences. Academic surgery in Mashhad has a rich history dating back to the inauguration of the surgery ward at Imam Reza Hospital (formerly Shahreza Hospital) in 1934. The department evolved under early pioneers and transitioned into a modern educational center in the mid-1950s, establishing a structured residency training program. With the opening of Ghaem Hospital in the late 1960s and early 1970s, surgical training expanded further, leading to the creation of specialized surgical fields including thoracic, pediatric, plastic, vascular, and oncologic surgery. Today, the department manages surgical education and clinical care across major university hospitals, including Imam Reza, Ghaem, and Dr. Sheikh hospitals.
