Ibn-e-Sina Psychiatric Hospital

Institutional Overview & History

Ibn-e-Sina Psychiatric Hospital serves as the principal academic, tertiary training, and clinical referral center for psychiatry and behavioral sciences in northeastern Iran. The hospital operates under the direct governance of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences (MUMS).

Academic teaching in psychiatry began before 1970 at Hejazi Hospital and was later continued through the psychiatric outpatient clinics of Ghaem Hospital.

In 1973, psychiatric services transitioned to Saleh Psychiatric Hospital. Following the Islamic Revolution, a dedicated psychiatric facility known as the “Shafa” Psychiatric Center was established, expanding from an initial 20-bed unit into a 120-bed center.

In 2000 (1379), academic psychiatric training and tertiary psychiatric services were consolidated and transferred to Ibn-e-Sina Psychiatric Hospital, establishing the institution as the central academic psychiatric hospital of Khorasan Razavi.

The current Department of Psychiatry comprises 20 faculty members and provides education and training for undergraduate medical students, psychiatry residents, child and adolescent psychiatry fellows, and postgraduate scholars in clinical psychology, psychiatric nursing, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and psychiatric social work.
