Department of Health Information Technology (HIT)

Overview

The Department of Health Information Technology (HIT) at the Faculty of Paramedical and Rehabilitation Sciences focuses on the comprehensive lifecycle of healthcare data—from collection, digital storage, and classification to retrieval, synthesis, and secure transmission. Serving as the vital bridge between modern medicine, data science, and computerized management, our discipline designs and optimizes electronic health infrastructures. We empower clinicians, hospital administrators, and researchers with robust digital tools and quality-controlled health analytics essential for clinical decision-making and modern healthcare governance.

History and Evolution

To address the digital transformation of Iran’s healthcare sector, the department established its cutting-edge Health Information Technology Laboratory in October 2001. Systematically upgrading its computational architecture, the department integrated advanced server technologies, enterprise Hospital Information Systems (HIS), and open-source electronic medical record platforms. Initially offering undergraduate education, the department expanded its academic horizons to graduate education, training high-caliber data architects and medical informatics specialists who drive healthcare modernization nationwide.

Academic & Research Scope

The department delivers academic degrees and maintains specialized technical environments supported by expert faculty, including Associate Professors, Assistant Professors, and Lecturers:

  • Bachelor of Science in HIT (B.Sc.): A 4-year, 130-credit curriculum encompassing General Courses (24 credits), Basic Courses (21 credits), Specialized Courses (69 credits), and rigorous Field Internships (16 credits). Students master medical coding, data quality audit, and system design.
  • Master of Science in HIT (M.Sc.): An advanced 2 to 3-year, 32-credit postgraduate program, including 6 thesis credits, 20 specialized credits, and 6 prerequisite credits, focused on strategic health data management, informatics research, and systems analysis.
  • Health Information Technology Laboratory: A dedicated 25-workstation research and practical facility equipped with Gigabit network infrastructure, dedicated HP ProLiant enterprise servers, and interactive digital tribunes.
  • Specialized Software & Systems: Hands-on training on enterprise HIS, OpenEMR, OpenMRS, GIS spatial health software (ArcGIS), and advanced epidemiological/statistical suites, including GraphPad Prism and Epi Info 7.

Mission and Vision

  • Our Mission: To deliver high-quality education and research in medical data science; produce adept HIT leaders capable of designing ethical, standardized, and secure health databases; and provide consultative services to healthcare facilities.
  • Our Vision: To be a benchmark academic hub in health information technology and clinical data analytics in the region, steering digital health innovations that enhance patient safety and healthcare efficiency.
