Department of Infectious Diseases & Tropical Medicine

Head’s Message
Welcome to the Department of Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine at Mashhad University of Medical Sciences. Our ultimate goal is to improve public health through scientific excellence in managing infectious diseases. We believe that clinical teaching is not merely about treating a patient, but about mentoring students, interns, and residents through evidence-based practice and medical ethics. By fostering an encouraging, vibrant, and innovative environment, we aim to train the next generation of healthcare leaders who will treat patients with both clinical precision and compassion.
Overview
The roots of infectious disease training in Mashhad date back to the early days of the Faculty of Medicine. Initially, teaching occurred at the “200-Bed Hospital” and later at Hospital No. 2 (Dr. Sheikh Hospital). Following transitions to the “3rd of Esfand” Hospital and Mentasserieh Hospital in the 1970s, the department finally settled in its modern, specialized structure at Imam Reza Hospital in the 1990s. Today, under the leadership of our experienced faculty, the department serves as the primary referral center for complex infectious cases in the region.
