Overview

Welcome to the Department of Internal Medicine at Mashhad University of Medical Sciences. The clinical services of internal medicine began with the establishment of Imam Reza Hospital (formerly Shahreza Hospital) in 1934, which initially operated as a 100-bed facility. Following an agreement in 1975, the hospital was officially transferred to the university, developing into a major academic and clinical training center. Today, the Department of Internal Medicine is one of the largest and most comprehensive departments at the university, utilizing the clinical capacities of major teaching hospitals to train medical students, interns, residents, and subspecialty fellows.

Our Expertise

The Department of Internal Medicine offers comprehensive diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventive care across various subspecialties of adult medicine:

• Gastroenterology and Hepatology: Providing advanced diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures, liver biopsies, and ERCP through specialized clinical facilities.
• Nephrology and Hypertension: Management of renal diseases, renal biopsies, dialysis, plasmapheresis, and kidney transplantation services.
• Hematology and Oncology: Inpatient and outpatient chemotherapy services, leukemia diagnostics, bone marrow aspiration and biopsy, and hemoglobin electrophoresis.
• Rheumatology: Specialized management of rheumatologic and autoimmune disorders, joint biopsies, and intra-articular injections.
• Endocrinology and Metabolism: Diagnosis and management of endocrine and metabolic disorders, thyroid fine-needle aspiration (FNA), and serum protein electrophoresis.
• Pulmonology: Evaluation of respiratory diseases, pulmonary function testing, pleural biopsy, and transbronchial lung biopsy.
• Toxicology: Management of clinical poisoning and toxicological emergencies.

Objectives:

• Delivering structured clinical education to medical students, residents, and subspecialty fellows in accordance with national guidelines.
• Promoting interdisciplinary clinical research and supporting dedicated research centers (such as the Liver Diseases Research Center and Rheumatology Research Center).
• Expanding patient access to specialized and subspecialized medical interventions.
• Maintaining high standards of safety and quality in inpatient wards, outpatient clinics, and paraclinical services.
