Department of Medical Ethics

department of medical ethics, mashhad university of medical sciences

Overview

Medical ethics is an applied branch of ethics and moral philosophy concerned with clarifying right and wrong in medical practice and healthcare. Its primary aim is to improve the quality of patient care by promoting ethical standards, professional responsibility, and sound decision-making in medicine.

As an interdisciplinary field, medical ethics draws on philosophy, law, theology, jurisprudence, sociology, psychology, economics, literature, and history to address ethical issues in clinical care, biomedical research, medical education, and health policy.

Our Expertise

Medical ethics has both theoretical and practical dimensions. The theoretical dimension examines the foundational concepts, principles, and assumptions of ethical reasoning and their relationship with culture, religion, and social values. The practical dimension addresses ethical challenges arising in medicine and healthcare and provides applicable frameworks for decision-making, particularly in complex and critical situations.

Historical Background

Ethics has a history of more than 2,500 years. Medical ethics has long been associated with the ideas of major philosophers such as Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle. Hippocrates was among the first to integrate ethical principles into medical practice through the Hippocratic Oath, while the Declaration of Geneva, adopted by the World Medical Association in 1948, represents a modern expression of this tradition.

In recent decades, rapid developments in medical science and technology, together with the emergence of new ethical challenges, have led to the expansion of medical ethics at international, regional, and national levels.

Medical Ethics in Iran

Medicine and medical ethics have a long-standing tradition in Iran, extending back to ancient times. Medical practice in Persian civilization was closely associated with moral and religious values, and ethical conduct was regarded as an essential characteristic of physicians. In later Islamic medical scholarship, many authoritative texts included dedicated discussions on the ethical duties and professional qualities of physicians.

In contemporary Iran, medical ethics has gained increasing importance in response to the growing complexity of healthcare and the strong emphasis placed on human dignity, spiritual values, and patient rights. The establishment of specialized centers, academic programs, educational resources, and ethical oversight bodies has significantly advanced this field.

Educational and Research Mission

The Department of Medical Ethics is dedicated to advancing education, research, and scholarly dialogue in medical ethics and bioethics.
