The Department of Medicinal Chemistry (Pharmaceutical Chemistry) operates at the vital intersection of synthetic organic chemistry, computational modeling, pharmacology, and structural biology. It is dedicated to the discovery, rational design, chemical synthesis, and pharmacological and analytical characterization of bioactive molecules and therapeutic agents. Medicinal chemistry investigates the molecular mechanisms of drug action and establishes quantitative structure-activity relationships (SAR) to link chemical architecture with biological response, providing the scientific foundation for drug discovery, development, and quality assurance.

History and Evolution

As one of the foundational academic pillars of the School of Pharmacy at Mashhad University of Medical Sciences, the Department of Medicinal Chemistry has continuously expanded its research infrastructure to keep pace with global developments in computational biology and nanotechnology. The department has established specialized research laboratories dedicated to organic synthesis, instrumental drug analysis, molecular modeling, and nanomedicine, supporting undergraduate Pharm.D. education and doctoral (Ph.D.) research programs.

Academic & Research Scope

Our curriculum and research initiatives span classical chemical synthesis, molecular dynamics, and advanced drug delivery:

• Computer-Aided Drug Design (CADD): Molecular modeling, molecular dynamics simulations, structure-based and ligand-based virtual screening, and computational SAR evaluations.
• Synthetic Medicinal Chemistry: Rational design and chemical synthesis of novel heterocyclic compounds, bioactive small molecules, and targeted chemotherapeutic agents for oncological applications.
• Nano-Targeted Delivery Systems: Formulation and characterization of smart nano-carriers, functionalized nanomaterials, and targeted delivery conjugates for anticancer medications.
• Pharmaceutical Quality Control & Analysis: Instrumental analysis, pharmacokinetic evaluation, drug stability testing, bioavailability assessments, and development of novel diagnostic biosensors.
