Overview

Welcome to the Department of Microbiology and Virology at Mashhad University of Medical Sciences. As one of the university’s oldest academic units, the department was founded in 1949 (1328) through the dedicated efforts of pioneering faculty members. Over the decades, our clinical activities expanded significantly alongside the development of laboratories at Imam Reza (AS) and Ghaem (AJ) hospitals. To meet the demands of modern scientific inquiry, the department transitioned the majority of its research operations to the specialized Research Center of Microbiology and Virology at the Bu-Ali Research Institute in 2006 (1385). Today, the department stands as a vital center for education, research, and diagnostic services, addressing the challenges of infectious diseases.

Our Expertise

The Department of Microbiology and Virology combines basic scientific inquiry with clinical diagnostic services. Our core capabilities include:

• Academic Education: We deliver comprehensive bacteriology and virology education to undergraduate students in Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Midwifery, and Laboratory Sciences, alongside specialized postgraduate programs.
• Specialized Clinical Diagnostics: Our faculty and staff actively supervise, develop, and run clinical diagnostic tests within university hospital laboratories to optimize the detection and management of infectious diseases.
• Translational Research: We conduct basic and applied research targeting community health concerns, microbial pathogenesis, antibiotic resistance, and vaccine development, contributing to national healthcare research priorities.
• Institutional Consultation: The department offers expert scientific consultations to healthcare authorities and actively participates in hospital infection control committees, the Education Development Center (EDC), and clinical residency training.
