Welcome to the Department of Neurology at Mashhad University of Medical Sciences. Since our independence in 2001, we have dedicated ourselves to advancing neurological care, surgical support, and academic education. Our department is committed to providing state-of-the-art diagnostic and therapeutic services for patients with complex neurological disorders. Through a combination of rigorous residency training, innovative clinical research, and advanced neuro-critical care, we strive to improve patient outcomes and contribute to the global advancement of clinical neuroscience.

Overview

The Department of Neurology traces its history to the era when it was joint with Psychiatry, led by the late Dr. Gholam Ali Arabshahi and later by Dr. Farrokh and Dr. Haerian. In 2000-2001, the department became an independent academic entity. Under the leadership of Dr. Etemadi (since 1995), the department has undergone significant expansion. Key developments include the establishment of specialized units such as the Stroke ICU, neuro-critical care units, and the Nerve and Muscle Laboratory, with ongoing plans to expand inpatient capacity to 40 beds.

The department possesses advanced capabilities in:

• Neuro-critical Care: Managing acute neurological emergencies and complex ICU cases.
• Stroke Management: Dedicated 8-bed Stroke ICU for acute intervention.
• Neurophysiology: Comprehensive laboratory services for EEG, Electromyography (EMG), and Nerve Conduction Studies.
• Genetic & Muscle Disorders: Diagnosis through the specialized Nerve and Muscle Laboratory.
• Diagnostic Imaging: Transcranial and Cranial Doppler Laboratory.
• Neuropathology: Specialized pathological evaluation of neurological tissue.

Clinical Scope

The department is based at Ghaem Hospital and operates a high-volume clinical environment, including:

• 20-bed Neurology Ward and 25-bed Neurology Emergency Ward.
• 6-bed Neuro-critical Care Unit and 8-bed Stroke ICU.
• Central Neurology Clinic and various diagnostic laboratories.

• Vision: To be a center of excellence in neurological training and patient care in northeastern Iran.
• Mission: To educate skilled neurologists through evidence-based clinical practice and promote research in neuro-genetic and acute neurological conditions.
• Objectives: Maintaining a specialized library, utilizing modern educational halls for residents, and expanding clinical research in neuromuscular and vascular neurology.
