Overview

The Department of Neuroscience at Mashhad University of Medical Sciences (MUMS) was established in October 2016 as an interdisciplinary center of excellence. Since its inception, the department has been dedicated to fostering collaboration across basic and clinical sciences to promote translational, innovative, and collaborative neuroscience research, clinical care, and education. We bring together researchers from various fields to explore fundamental neurobiological mechanisms—from molecular biology and neural stem cells to human perception, memory, language, and the nature of consciousness.

Research Focus

The department prioritizes high-impact research aimed at understanding brain function and translating findings into clinical applications. Our current research focus includes:

• Stem Cell Research: Investigating the application of stem cells in the treatment of neurological disorders.
• Epilepsy Research: Conducting both basic and clinical studies to improve diagnosis and management.
• Neurobiology: Exploring the molecular mechanisms of early brain development and cellular neuroscience.
• Brain Biobank: Establishing a specialized biobank to support future clinical and basic neuroscience research in collaboration with clinical units.
• Advanced Techniques: Implementing state-of-the-art research methodologies to lead national and international scientific production.

Mission & Objectives

Our mission is to cultivate competent researchers and healthcare professionals, enhance national research capabilities, and elevate Iran’s standing in global neuroscience. Our key objectives include:

• Advanced Education: Providing high-quality MSc and PhD programs to train the next generation of specialists.
• Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Strengthening ties with internal and external research centers—most notably our established partnership with the University of Münster (Germany).
• Translational Research: Developing evidence-based diagnostic and therapeutic solutions for neurological and psychiatric problems.
• Innovation: Promoting self-sufficiency in drug development and creating new cognitive-based technological models.
