Welcome to the Department of Neurosurgery and Spine Surgery. Our department serves as a cornerstone of complex surgical care at Mashhad University of Medical Sciences. We are dedicated to providing state-of-the-art neurosurgical and spinal procedures, supported by a multidisciplinary approach that includes neuro-trauma centers and advanced surgical technology. Our mission is to educate skilled surgeons through rigorous clinical training while conducting research that pushes the boundaries of neurosurgical science. Overview

The Department of Neurosurgery and Spine Surgery at Mashhad University of Medical Sciences has a long history that dates back to the early decades of modern neurosurgical practice in Mashhad. Neurosurgical services began at Imam Reza Hospital in the late 1340s SH and evolved into an educational department in 1364 SH. Since then, the department has expanded across multiple teaching hospitals and has become a major regional center for complex neurosurgical care and training.

Expertise

The department’s expertise covers the diagnosis and surgical management of brain and spinal disorders, including:

• Head and spinal trauma
• Brain tumors and skull-base lesions
• Cerebrovascular disease (aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations)
• Hydrocephalus and epilepsy-related surgery
• Peripheral nerve disorders and congenital anomalies
• Spine diseases and complex spinal instrumentation
• Microsurgery, stereotactic surgery, neuroendoscopy, and endovascular surgery

Clinical Scope

The department provides care at Ghaem Hospital, Shahid Kamyab Emdadi Hospital, and Akbar Children’s Hospital. Its services include trauma surgery, neurocritical care, brain and spine surgery, pediatric neurosurgery, and complex vascular and minimally invasive procedures. The department performs approximately 3,000 neurosurgical operations annually and works through multiple intensive care units and specialized surgical centers.

Educational & Research Mission

The department trains residents in a structured multi-center program and has produced a large number of graduates who are now working across the country. It supports advanced technical training through a microneurosurgery laboratory, clinical skills collaboration, and planned fellowship development in spine surgery and endovascular neurosurgery. Its research and educational mission is centered on innovation, surgical precision, and the development of future neurosurgical subspecialists.
