Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology

department of obstetrics and gynecology, mashhad university of medical sciences

Head’s Message

Welcome to the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Mashhad University of Medical Sciences. Since our clinical foundation in 1934, our department has been dedicated to improving women’s health through academic excellence, advanced patient care, and cutting-edge clinical research. Today, our faculty members and subspecialists span critical fields including Perinatology, Gynecologic Oncology, Infertility and Reproductive Medicine, and Minimally Invasive Surgery. By integrating clinical training across our major university centers—Imam Reza, Ghaem, and Omolbanin Hospitals, as well as the Milad Infertility Center—we ensure that our residents, interns, and medical students receive comprehensive, hands-on experience in both routine and high-risk cases. Our mission is to train compassionate, ethical, and highly skilled obstetricians and gynecologists who will lead healthcare delivery and clinical research nationally and internationally.

Overview

Academic obstetrics and gynecology in Mashhad trace its origins back to 1934 (1313 SH) with the inauguration of the gynecology ward at Imam Reza Hospital, initially led by German physician Professor Hamisch Lach and subsequently by Dr. Mahmoud Ziaei, a graduate of the American University of Beirut. Over the following decades, the department expanded alongside the establishment of the Mashhad Medical School (1949) and Ghaem Hospital (1971). To accommodate growing clinical and training needs, the department integrated Hazrat-e Zeinab Hospital in 1992, which was later relocated to Omolbanin Hospital in 2005. Today, Hazrat-e Zeinab Hospital operates as the Milad Infertility Center, serving as the university’s dedicated reproductive medicine hub. The department honors its early pioneers—including Dr. Ziaei, Dr. Salari, Dr. Partovi, and their successors—who established the foundation of modern obstetric education in the region.

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology comprises 24 academic faculty members (including 6 Professors, 7 Associate Professors, and 11 Assistant Professors) who deliver comprehensive education, clinical services, and research. Clinical Scope

The department delivers clinical services across four primary university centers:

  • Imam Reza Hospital: Home to advanced laparoscopic gynecology, pelvic floor reconstructive surgeries, and high-risk pregnancy management.
  • Ghaem Hospital: Focuses on gynecologic oncology and high-risk pregnancy care.
  • Omolbanin Hospital: A specialized, women-only maternity hospital providing general obstetric and gynecological care.
  • Milad Infertility Center (formerly Hazrat-e Zeinab): The primary center for reproductive endocrinology, IVF, and assisted reproductive technologies (ART).

Educational & Research Mission

The department supports a large educational portfolio, training 59 clinical residents (admitting approximately 15 new residents annually), alongside medical students during their clerkship and internship rotations.

  • Vision: To decrease maternal and neonatal mortality and morbidity while maintaining national leadership in obstetric and gynecological education, subspecialty clinical training, and reproductive research.
  • Mission: To train competent general practitioners and specialists equipped with strong clinical skills, medical ethics, and evidence-based decision-making capabilities.

Objectives:

  • Medical Clerkship (6 weeks): Structuring rotations across Imam Reza, Ghaem, and Omolbanin hospitals. Students gain core competencies based on a structured curriculum, utilize the clinical skills lab for hands-on pelvic and obstetric models, and undergo OSCE and logbook-based evaluations.
  • Medical Internship (8 weeks): Developing practical management skills through 24-hour calls, clinical decision-making, prescription writing, and structured morning reports.
  • Professional Ethics: Emphasizing professional behavior and patient privacy as core components of clinical evaluations.
