Department of Occupational Health and Safety Engineering

department of occupational health and safety engineering, mashhad university of medical sciences

Overview

The Department of Occupational Health and Safety Engineering at Mashhad University of Medical Sciences is dedicated to the science and practice of anticipating, recognizing, evaluating, and controlling workplace hazards. We focus on safeguarding workers against physical, chemical, biological, ergonomic, and psychosocial risks across diverse sectors—including manufacturing, oil and gas, mining, agriculture, and healthcare. By integrating engineering controls, human factors ergonomics, and occupational hygiene, our department plays a vital role in preventing work-related injuries and illnesses, enhancing human productivity, and fostering safe, sustainable working environments.

History and Evolution

Since its establishment, the department has undergone continuous academic and infrastructural expansion:

  • Inception (2009): The department commenced academic training in October 2009 by offering an Associate Degree in Occupational Health.
  • Undergraduate Expansion (2012–2013): Successfully launched the Continuous and Non-Continuous Bachelor of Science (BSc) programs in Occupational Health and Safety Engineering in 2012 and 2013.
  • Postgraduate Programs (2020–Present): Following major expansions in research infrastructure and faculty recruitment, the department established its Master of Science (MSc) program in 2020, having successfully graduated and trained multiple cohorts of specialized postgraduate scholars.
  • Advanced Laboratory Infrastructure: The department is equipped with modern, specialized training and research facilities, including laboratories for Physical Agents, Air Sampling & Air Chemical Analysis, Ergonomics, Acoustics & Lighting, as well as specialized Electrical, Fire, and Machinery Safety Workshops. Furthermore, our shared Instrumental Analysis Laboratory houses advanced analytical systems including GC, HPLC, and both Flame and Graphite Furnace Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (AAS).

Expertise and Strategic Scope

Our academic and research scope spans comprehensive health, safety, and environment (HSE) domains:

  • Industrial Hygiene & Exposure Assessment: Quantitative monitoring and analytical assessment of workplace air contaminants, toxic vapors, particulates, noise, vibration, and thermal stress.
  • Safety Engineering & Risk Management: Process safety analysis, fire dynamics, electrical/machinery safety engineering, and systemic accident investigation methodologies.
  • Ergonomics & Human Factors: Biomechanical risk assessment, physical and cognitive ergonomics, workstation optimization, and prevention of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs).
  • Industry & Community Consulting: Providing specialized diagnostic, advisory, and laboratory services to industrial partners, regulatory bodies, and public organizations to formulate and implement occupational safety standards.

Mission and Vision

  • Our Mission: To educate ethical, highly skilled occupational health and safety professionals; conduct innovative, translational, and technology-driven research addressing national workplace challenges; and deliver evidence-based consultative and laboratory services that elevate industrial HSE standards.
  • Our Vision: To be recognized as a premier center of excellence in occupational health and safety education and applied research, driving sustainable development and workforce well-being across the region and beyond.
