Overview

Welcome to the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Mashhad University of Medical Sciences. Prior to the late 1960s, orthopedic care in Mashhad was managed under general surgery. The department took its first steps toward specialization under its first chairman, the late Dr. Ahrabi Nezhad. Following the return of Dr. Jafar Amini from Canada in 1970, and with the opening of Ghaem (AJ) Hospital in 1972, the department established its clinical and academic presence. The residency program was launched in 1974 (1353 SH), providing rotational training in trauma and elective orthopedics across major university hospitals. Today, the department has grown into a major regional center for musculoskeletal care, training, and specialized clinical research.

Our Expertise

The Department of Orthopedic Surgery offers high-volume clinical services and advanced academic training, structured across three major teaching hospitals (Ghaem, Imam Reza, and Shahid Kamyab):

• Extensive Clinical Infrastructure: Managing approximately 200 patient beds, 12 elective teaching operating rooms, emergency trauma clinics, and specialized outpatient clinics.
• Subspecialty Care: Faculty members provide advanced care across dedicated fellowships, including Hand, Elbow, Shoulder, Spine, Hip, Knee, Foot & Ankle, and Orthopedic Oncology (Tumor).
• Trauma & Elective Training: Providing structured residency training in acute musculoskeletal trauma at Shahid Kamyab (Emdadi) and Imam Reza hospitals, alongside elective reconstructive surgeries at Ghaem Hospital.

Our mission is to train competent orthopedic surgeons, advance clinical research in musculoskeletal disorders, and deliver excellent orthopedic care.
