Department of Parasitology and Mycology

Overview
Welcome to the Department of Medical Parasitology and Mycology at Mashhad University of Medical Sciences (MUMS). Our department has a rich history of academic evolution. Originally established as part of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Sciences, our unit gained independence in October 2003 following a strategic restructuring of the Faculty of Medicine. Today, we stand as a dedicated center of excellence, supported by eleven experienced faculty members. We are committed to providing comprehensive education in medical parasitology and mycology to students across various levels, from associate degrees to PhD programs, in full alignment with the standards set by the Ministry of Health and Medical Education.
Our Expertise
Our department is at the forefront of studying parasites and fungi that interact with the human body, focusing on zoonotic diseases, human-to-human transmission, and the clinical management of parasitic and mycotic infections. We prepare our students to master both the theoretical and clinical aspects of our field. By the end of their studies, students are expected to:
- Master the morphology and scientific nomenclature of common parasites and fungi, particularly those prevalent in Iran.
- Analyze complex life cycles, infection sources, and reservoirs.
- Explain the geographical distribution and transmission dynamics of endemic diseases.
- Identify key clinical symptoms and determine the most effective treatment protocols and pharmaceutical interventions.
- Demonstrate proficiency in utilizing digital resources and scientific literature to resolve diagnostic and therapeutic challenges in clinical settings.
