Pharmaceutical Biotechnology is a multidisciplinary discipline that harnesses biological systems, living organisms, cellular machinery, and metabolic processes to develop advanced therapeutic and diagnostic products. With the expansion of recombinant DNA technology, metabolic engineering, and bioprocess technologies, biopharmaceuticals—including monoclonal antibodies, recombinant proteins, therapeutic nucleic acids, and modern vaccines—represent the frontier of medicine. The Department of Pharmaceutical Biotechnology integrates molecular genetics, bioprocessing, and nanotechnology to pioneer novel therapies, targeted delivery systems, and biosensors.

History and Evolution

Pharmaceutical biotechnology has transitioned over recent decades from fundamental laboratory science into an essential pillar of global healthcare and pharmaceutical manufacturing. To meet the expanding demands of Iran’s rapidly growing biopharmaceutical sector—forecasted to remain one of the most dynamic in the MENA region—the Department of Pharmaceutical Biotechnology at MUMS was established to train expert researchers and bioprocess scientists capable of spearheading biological drug discovery, academic research, and industrial biomanufacturing.

Academic & Research Scope

Our academic framework bridges fundamental molecular biology with cutting-edge biopharmaceutical engineering:

• Gene & Targeted Drug Delivery: Design, engineering, and formulation of non-viral gene delivery vectors, nanomedicines, and smart nano-carriers for targeted cancer therapy.
• Recombinant DNA Technology & Bioprocessing: Gene cloning, recombinant protein expression, bioprocess optimization, cell culture systems, and genetic polymorphism (SNP) genotyping.
• Oncology & Gene Regulation: Investigating mechanisms of drug resistance gene expression in tumors, evaluating the impact of pro-inflammatory factors, and screening antitumor properties of indigenous Iranian medicinal flora.
• Biomaterials & Biosensing: Fabrication of functionalized nanomaterials, tissue engineering scaffolds, and diagnostic biosensors for biomedical and clinical applications.
