Department of Pharmaceutical Control

Overview

The Department of Pharmaceutical Control focuses on quality assurance (QA) and quality control (QC) methodologies essential for pharmaceutical, biopharmaceutical, cosmetic, and food manufacturing industries. Product safety, potency, purity, and stability are verified through physical, chemical, microbiological, and instrumental analyses from early drug formulation to finished commercial products. The department prepares pharmacists and analytical specialists to implement Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), validate analytical and industrial procedures, and maintain quality regulatory standards.

History and Evolution

Formally established as an independent department in 2016 (1395 SH), the Department of Pharmaceutical Control was created to address the expanding regulatory demands of modern pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical manufacturing. With five experienced full-time faculty members, the department has executed more than 50 research projects, published over 150 papers in peer-reviewed journals, and equipped four teaching and specialized research laboratories serving academic and industrial quality control testing.

Academic & Research Scope

The department integrates instrumental chemical analysis, microbial safety testing, biopharmaceutical quality control, and regulatory compliance:

  • Academic & Curricular Programs: Teaching specialized coursework for Pharm.D. and postgraduate students, covering physicochemical analysis of drugs, microbial control of pharmaceuticals and cosmetics, quality assurance systems, and analytical method validation.
  • Microbiological Quality & Antimicrobial Research: Assessing the efficacy of novel and natural antimicrobial agents against multidrug-resistant pathogens and evaluating modern antimicrobial delivery systems in food and drug matrices.
  • Biopharmaceutical & Protein Stability: Physicochemical profiling of therapeutic proteins, degradation pathways, stabilization techniques, and developing biosensors for trace antibiotic residue detection.
  • Industrial Regulatory Support & Quality Systems: Preparing and auditing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), statistical quality control systems, analytical method validation protocols, and GMP framework documentation for pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities.

Mission and Vision

  • Our Mission: To educate pharmacists and quality analysts in international quality control standards; to conduct applied research in microbial and physicochemical analysis of medicines and cosmetics; and to provide specialized analytical services and GMP consultations to the pharmaceutical industry.
  • Our Vision: To be a accredited regional reference and testing center for pharmaceutical quality control, regulatory validation, and bioproduct stability assessment.
