Department of Pharmaceutical Nanotechnology

Overview
Pharmaceutical Nanotechnology is an advanced, interdisciplinary field focused on engineering nanoscale systems to design targeted, customized drug delivery platforms and advanced therapeutic formulations. Operating at the sub-micron scale, nanomedicine modifies the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic profiles of bioactive molecules—optimizing absorption, tissue distribution, metabolic stability, and cellular clearance while minimizing systemic adverse effects. Nanoscale formulations are integrated across conventional dosage forms, including oral tablets, capsules, pulmonary aerosols, and sterile injectables, significantly improving drug bioavailability and therapeutic efficacy. As one of the most productive academic units at Mashhad University of Medical Sciences (MUMS), the Department of Pharmaceutical Nanotechnology is dedicated to frontier research, intellectual property generation, and commercialization in nanomedicine, vaccine delivery, tissue engineering, and cancer immunotherapy.
History and Evolution
The Ph.D. program in Pharmaceutical Nanotechnology was established in Iran in 2009 (1388 SH) to cultivate high-caliber researchers and drive technological self-sufficiency in nanobiotechnology. At MUMS School of Pharmacy, the department has grown into a leading research powerhouse. Faculty members and researchers have developed and patented numerous nanoformulations—particularly for solubilizing hydrophobic drug candidates via nanosuspensions and nanoencapsulation. Multiple nanotechnology-based pharmaceutical products developed within the department have achieved clinical commercialization, with ongoing industrial translation and spin-off ventures expanding into national and international markets.
Academic & Research Scope
The academic and technological programs bridge advanced nanoscale science with industrial translation:
- Targeted Drug & Gene Delivery: Engineering functionalized lipidic (liposomes, solid lipid nanoparticles), polymeric, and inorganic nanoparticles for targeted oncological pharmacotherapy and non-viral gene therapy.
- Solubility & Bioavailability Enhancement: Designing nanosuspensions, nanoemulsions, and nano-encapsulation platforms to enhance dissolution rates and cellular uptake of poorly water-soluble therapeutics.
- Transdermal, Mucosal & Pulmonary Delivery: Developing nano-enabled carrier systems for optimized transdermal, pulmonary, mucosal, ophthalmic, and otic administration.
- Biomaterials & Nanodiagnostics: Fabricating nanobiosensors, diagnostic nanobio-kits, and biofunctional scaffolds for regenerative medicine and tissue engineering.
- Postgraduate Ph.D. Education: Providing specialized doctoral training spanning nanobiotechnology, cellular and molecular biology, nanobiomaterials, advanced pharmacokinetics, microscopic nanoparticle characterization, and molecular imaging.
Mission and Vision
- Our Mission: To deliver premier doctoral education in pharmaceutical nanotechnology; to conduct high-impact fundamental and translational research; to develop commercially viable nanoformulations addressing critical healthcare needs; and to bridge academic discoveries with the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry.
