Department of Pharmacognosy

Overview
Pharmacognosy is a foundational pharmaceutical discipline focused on the systematic study of medicinal and bioactive compounds derived from biological and natural origins—encompassing terrestrial plants, marine organisms, microorganisms, animals, and natural minerals. Bridging medicinal botany, natural product chemistry (phytochemistry), separation sciences, and biological screening, the department is dedicated to the identification, extraction, structural elucidation, quantitative standardization, and therapeutic evaluation of primary and secondary natural metabolites. The Department of Pharmacognosy prepares Pharm.D. candidates and doctoral research scholars to harness natural bioactive resources for evidence-based drug discovery, botanical formulation, and modern natural product pharmacology.
History and Evolution
The Department of Pharmacognosy was established in 1971 (1350 SH) alongside the Departments of Pharmaceutics, Medicinal Chemistry, and Pharmacology as one of the foundational academic pillars of the School of Pharmacy at Mashhad University of Medical Sciences (MUMS). In its initial decades, the department encompassed broad investigations into natural extracts as well as early pharmaceutical biotechnology coursework. Following the official establishment of the Department of Pharmaceutical Biotechnology as an independent entity in 2008 (1387 SH), the department refined its core focus on phytochemistry and natural herbal medicines, continuously expanding its postgraduate programs and advanced instrumental infrastructure. The academic legacy of the department has been shaped by distinguished scholars and leaders, including the late Dr. Ali Zargari, Dr. Shahram Yaghmaei, Dr. Giti Hariri Zadeh, Dr. Mohammad Ramezani, Dr. Javad Behravan, and Dr. Javad Asili.
Academic & Research Scope
The academic and laboratory programs combine classical medicinal botany with advanced chromatographic, spectroscopic, and metabolomic analyses:
- Curricular Education: Offering comprehensive theoretical and practical coursework in Pharmacognosy, Phytochemistry, Medicinal Botany, Plant Tissue Culture, and Herbal Medicine Dispensing for Pharm.D. and postgraduate curricula.
- Extraction, Isolation & Structural Elucidation: Utilizing advanced separation techniques to isolate and identify novel bioactive secondary metabolites (alkaloids, flavonoids, terpenoids, polyphenols) from Iran’s diverse indigenous flora.
- Advanced Instrumental Analysis: Operating state-of-the-art analytical suites equipped with High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS), and spectrophotometric platforms for qualitative profiling and quantitative standardization.
- Bioassays & Natural Product Pharmacology: Conducting in vitro and in vivo biological screenings to evaluate antioxidant, antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, and cytotoxic properties of natural extracts and pure phytochemicals.
- Metabolomics & Plant Biotechnology: Implementing plant cell/tissue culture systems and metabolomic fingerprinting to optimize secondary metabolite yield and investigate biological pathways.
Mission and Vision
- Our Mission: To provide high-caliber education in pharmacognosy and phytochemistry; to isolate and characterize novel therapeutic molecules from natural sources; to standardize herbal formulations to support the education in pharmacognosy and phytochemistry; to isolate and characterize novel therapeutic molecules from natural sources; to standardize herbal formulations to support the pharmaceutical industry; and to train competent researchers capable of advancing national and international natural product discovery.
- Our Vision: To serve as an internationally recognized center of excellence in natural product research and metabolomics, driving innovation in phytomedicine and leading sustainable drug discovery from regional biodiversity.
