Overview

Welcome to the Department of Thoracic Surgery at Mashhad University of Medical Sciences. Thoracic surgery developed as an independent specialty in Mashhad in 1971, with the establishment of a dedicated service at Shahnaz Pahlavi Medical Center, now Ghaem Hospital. The department was founded by Professor Mohsen Azimi, trained in thoracic surgery in Paris, and Dr. Fereydoun Mahdavian, trained in Montreal, Canada. Before this period, thoracic procedures were performed within general surgery, particularly at the former Shah Reza Hospital, now Imam Reza Hospital. Over subsequent decades, the department developed into an active academic and clinical center for thoracic surgical care, education, and referral services in northeastern Iran.

Our Expertise

The Department of Thoracic Surgery provides specialized care for diseases requiring surgical management of the chest and thoracic organs.

• Thoracic Surgical Care: Evaluation and surgical treatment of a wide range of thoracic conditions, including pulmonary, pleural, mediastinal, and esophageal disorders.
• Oncologic Thoracic Surgery: Surgical management of thoracic malignancies, including selected lung and esophageal cancers.
• Complex Thoracic Conditions: Clinical management of conditions such as hydatid disease of the lung and other complex chest disorders.
• Academic Clinical Training: Providing clinical instruction and surgical learning opportunities for medical students, residents, and trainees rotating through the department.
• Regional Referral Services: Supporting patients referred from Mashhad and neighboring provinces through specialized thoracic surgical services.
