📜Chronological History & Heritage

Architectural Conception (1928)

  • Construction commenced in 1928 on 28.5 hectares of endowed central urban land.
  • Masterminded by the prominent European-educated architect Karim Taherzadeh Behzad, the complex features modern pavilion-style hospital architecture emphasizing large open gardens, wide sunlit corridors, natural cross-ventilation, and strict infection control boundaries.
  • Contemporary historical archives record that up to 1,000 skilled builders and artisans worked daily, totaling nearly 1.8 million man-days of continuous labor.

Formal Commissioning & Early Growth (1934–1975)

  • In October 1934, the facility officially commenced clinical operations with an initial capacity of 100 inpatient beds across Internal Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, Ophthalmology, Infectious Disease Quarantine, Obstetrics, Outpatient Dispensaries, and Pathology Laboratories.
  • 1945: Inauguration of the dedicated Pavilion for Otorhinolaryngology (Ear, Nose, and Throat).
  • 1948–1949: Capacity expanded to 250 beds. The Department of Surgery was directed by the legendary Belgian surgeon Dr. Gaston Boulvin, who institutionalized modern European surgical disciplines and trained generations of leading Iranian academic surgeons.
  • 1975: Under a long-term academic agreement, full administration was transferred to the university medical faculty to serve as its premier clinical training and residency hospital.

Contemporary Expansion (Post-Revolution to Present)
