Three Advanced Systems Installed and Ready for Use in Neurology Operating Room of Ghaem Hospital

Associate Professor and Head of Department of Neurosurgery at Mashhad University of Medical Sciences announced the installation of three new advanced devices in neurology operating room of Ghaem Hospital which help bring it up to international standards.

According to Webda, Dr. Hamid Etemad Rezaei said, “With the support of Vice Presidents for Education and Treatment and follow ups by Department of Neurosurgery and Ghaem Hospital management, three systems including Neuronavigation, Advanced Neurosurgical Microscope, and Intraoperative Neuromonitoring were installed in the operating room of this center for performing surgical operations with a higher accuracy and quality and providing better services to Emam Reza pilgrims and Mashhad citizens.”

He continued, “Neuronavigation system is currently used around the world for removal of brain and pituitary tumors and significantly increases the accuracy of operations. Three patients have so far undergone surgical operations with highly successful results. The fully automated and digital Advanced Neurosurgical Microscope, equipped with special filters, helps surgeons to remove brain lesions with more precision and control the health and intactness of remaining blood vessels by ECG. Using the mentioned technique and a special filter on this microscope enables more accurate resection of glial tumors. After follow ups, a Nervous Simulator system was also installed, which enhances the accuracy and quality of nerves control examination during operations.”

Dr. Etemad Rezaei noted that achieving international standards in neurosurgery requires advanced equipment and added, “One of the most important shortcomings of the Neurosurgery Department is Intraoperative MRI (iMRI), which is planned to be procured and installed with the support of the officials. Neurology operating room has been constructed in Emam Reza 610-bed Hospital, and physical requirements for installation of an iMRI system are now met. Mashhad is nicknamed ‘the spiritual capital of the Islamic world’ and many patients from other cities and from various countries travel to the city for treatment, so its operating rooms must comply with international standards.”

“A dedicated neuro cath lab is another requirement. Intravascular neurosurgeries are now performed in Cardiovascular Cath Lab, but can be done specifically for neurology patients after installation of a bi-plane angiography system in the neurosurgery room,” he added.

Dr. Etemad Rezaei finally appreciated the backing of the university’s Vice Presidents for Education and Treatment and Ghaem Hospital’s management in equipping Department of Neurosurgery with advanced devices and said, “Thanks to the support of Minister of Health and implementation of Health System Reform Plan, a fundamental change has happened in the area of medical equipment at academic and non-academic hospitals, which promises to lead to better services, both in terms of quality and quantity, to patients and pilgrims of Razavi Holy Shrine.
