700 Active Neurosurgeons in Iran

Dr. Hamid Rahmati, the head of Iran Neurosurgery Association, said: 700 neurosurgeons are currently at work all over the country. It can be stated that this number of neurosurgeons is considered proper in regards to the current population of Iran.

According to WebDa, in the side meetings of the First Neurosurgery Congress in Iran, Dr. Rahmati added: on the basis of world standards, for every 250 thousand individuals in the population, there must be one active neurosurgeon in the country. In Iran, this number is one per every 100 thousand individuals in the population.

He added: in Japan, for every 50 thousand individuals in the population, there is one neurosurgeon some of whom are working on research activities.

Speaking of the fact that more than 50 neurosurgeons graduate every year, he added: however, the high number of neurosurgeons does not accompany favorable consequences for the society. As they might pursue the treatments and surgeries that are not considered necessary, and there is a risk that they might irrationally devise cases of unnecessary surgeries for their patients.

Dr. Rahmati added: following the unnecessary increase in the number of neurosurgeons in countries such as Egypt, Turkey, and England, tactful measures have been undertaken.

“There is no accurate statistics about brain stokes incidences in Iran. According to the data available, prevalence of brain strokes is low in Iran”, added the head of Iran Neurosurgery Association.

“Based on statistics, in Scandinavian countries, 40 individuals among every 100 thousand population are annually inflicted with cases of intracranial hemorrhage and brain strokes, while in Iran, the statistics show 7 incidences in every 100 thousand of the population”.

He added: climatic and racial conditions play influential roles on various diseases in different countries.
