Education Regarding Drug Prevention Should Begin from Home

June 26, 2016 is the International Day against Drug Abuse and “Listen First”, listening to children and youngsters as the first step that contributes to their healthy and safe growth has been chosen as its slogan.

Vice Deputy of Health in Mashhad University of Medical Sciences said: education regarding prevention from drug abuse should begin from home and in early childhood, even before school age.

Referring to the fact that education in the family is a method based on evidence from drug abuse prevention and that according to international standard, it is the most important plan to prevent drug usage, Dr. Seyed Kazem Farahmand added: schools, NGOs, associations and the police can contribute to reducing drug abuse; however, none is as significant as the family and parents.

He continued: by enhancing child-rearing skills, parents can take serious measures to improve the health atmosphere and to socially and psychologically empower this crucial social class against social harms. Other people responsible in the society can act similarly by deeply recognizing the needs of teenagers and youngsters and their cognitive plan.

Vice Deputy of Health in Mashhad University of Medical Sciences regarded bilateral communication, being fully aware, raising appropriate questions, listening uninterruptedly, encouraging children and teenagers to speak, listening enthusiastically, use of open questions, and not denying their feelings as effective ways to communicate with children and teenagers.
