Faculty Members of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences’ Achievements in Geneva

Faculty members and one resident of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences won four gold medals and one silver medal at the forty-fourth International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva.

According to WEBDA, Dr. Ihsan Vahedi and Dr. Ali Moradi, faculty members of Department of Orthopedics, Mashhad University of Medical Sciences, along with a group of colleagues, won three gold medals, the exhibition’s special awards and special awards of the jury.

In this exhibition, three inventions including smart bone fractures reduction device, anchored plaque, and external fracture fixation device were presented, and all three were awarded the gold medal.”

Also, smart bone fractures reduction device won the special award in addition to the gold medal, and anchored plaque won jury’s award in addition to the gold medal.

Regarding these inventions, Dr. Ihsan Vahedi, faculty member of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences, said: “Smart bone fractures reduction device can be used without having to open the location of the fracture and the use of imaging; anchored plaque is also a simple method and an alternative to screws in the periarticular fractures, and external fixation device is used for hip fracture in elderly patients, with minimal complications and mortality.”.

Also, Dr. Darioush Hamidi Alamdari, Assistant Professor of Department of Biochemistry of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences, presented a laboratory method to assess oxidative stress using the prooxidant-antioxidant balance method and won the silver medal at the forty-fourth International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva.

Regarding his invention, this faculty member of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences said: “By increasing oxidants and reducing antioxidants, oxidative stress is involved in pathogenesis of many diseases, including cardiovascular diseases, stroke, rheumatoid arthritis, and lupus.”

Dr. Darioush Alamdari added: “So far, oxidants and antioxidants have been measured separately to assess oxidative stress, which was a costly and time-consuming procedure; but with PAB assay method, oxidants and antioxidants can be measured simultaneously in a single experiment.”

He said: “The benefits of this experimental method include very short procedure time, simplicity, and low cost.”

Also, Dr. Maryam Mirzayi, resident of social medicine of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences presented a new method for feeding babies born with poor sucking reflex and won the gold medal and jury’s award at the forty-fourth International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva.

Regarding this invention, Dr. Maryam Mirzayi said: “This invention is a new method for feeding babies born with poor sucking reflex, which accounts for a high incidence of births worldwide.”

She said: “This device consists of a connector connecting the baby bottle cap to the syringe, and a stand, enhancing the suction power and preventing the side effects of current available methods of nutrition in neonates.”

This invention was registered in April 2015 with support of Research Deputy of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences and won jury’s award in addition to the gold medal in this exhibition.

This exhibition was held on 13-17 April with the presence of 1200 inventors from 48 countries in Geneva, Switzerland.
