Genetic Tests, A New Method for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Cancer

Conference on the role of personal genetics in identifying genetic diseases, especially cancer, was held with the presence of genetics specialists, internists, oncologists, radiologists, and general practitioners hosted by Mashhad University of Medical Sciences in the amphitheater of School of Medicine. 

According to WEBDA, in this two-day conference, Professor Firouz Darroudi,PhD of Genetics and Health from the University of Leiden, Netherlands, is present.

Secretary of the conference titled “The Role of Personal Genetics in Identifying Genetic Diseases, Especially Cancer” said: “Personal genetics or the use of genetics and genomic tests are considered as new approaches to diagnosis and treatment of genetic diseases, especially cancer.”

Dr. Mohammad Reza Abbaszadegan added: “Genetic changes that occur in various diseases play an important role in diagnosis, treatment regulation and planning of these diseases, especially cancer.”

He mentioned: “For example, a chromosomal disorder occurs in every cancer patient, and following the occurred genetic changes, some products are created, causing the uncontrolled growth of cancer cells.”

Head of the Department of Medical Genetics of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences continued: “Using modern methods and biological treatments, products for inhibition of cancer cells are produced.”

He mentioned: “These treatments can be applied for all cancers, such as breast cancer, colorectal cancer, leukemia, genetic disorders, and genetic diseases like neonatal diabetes.”

According to him, these innovative approaches play an important role in the course of successfully treating cancer along with classic treatments including chemotherapy and radiation.

Dr. Abbaszadegan added: “In current chemotherapy treatment methods, recovery occurs in limited case, and the disease recurs; but in new treatments, the cancer cell is destroyed and final recovery occurs.”

Secretary of the conference “The Role of Personal Genetics in Identifying Genetic Diseases, Especially Cancer” added: “New treatments require diagnostic facilities and equipment by which the altered genetic code is diagnosed with closer inspection, and with the help of nanotechnology, biotechnology, and medical biotechnology, products for inhibiting these genes are produced.”

He added: “Currently, modern genetic treatment equipment is available only in a few centers in Tehran hoping that this equipment will be provided to medical centers across the country more quickly by the Ministry of Health and Treatment.”

He mentioned: “Prof. Darroudi of Leiden University in Netherlands, present in this conference, has numerous research in the field of medical genetics and has established specialized centers in Red Crescent, Dubai, and Doha, which soon will be established in Mashhad as well.”

Dr. Abbaszadegan said: “this conference mostly regards teaching and learning the personal genetics and its important role in the regulation of patient’s treatment.”

He noted: “Development and application of genetic and genomic tests for medical and personal preventive medical genetics, the importance of personal genetics in Iran, causes of genetic cancer with an advanced look at medical genetics, and the role of personal genetic medicine in the management of breast cancer are among the issues discussed during the two days of this conference.”

He also mentioned holding two roundtable discussions in this conference called "The Role of Personal Genetics in Managing All Cancers" and "The Role of Personal Genetics in Identifying All Diseases”.
